What is a Septic Tank?

Septic tanks harness the power of natural biological processes to break down and treat solid waste matter. These systems can be constructed from durable materials such as concrete, plastic, or fibreglass, ensuring long-lasting performance and resistance to corrosion or damage.
There are two primary types of septic tanks: holding tanks and tanks with an attached soakaway system. Holding tanks are designed to contain all waste until it can be properly removed and transported to a treatment facility. Tanks with soakaways, on the other hand, allow liquid effluent to be dispersed into the surrounding soil through a series of perforated pipes or a specialised drainage field.
Within a septic tank, the waste separates into three distinct layers: solids, effluent, and a crusty layer on top. The solid matter sinks to the bottom of the tank, where it undergoes decomposition by naturally occurring bacteria. This biological process leaves behind a liquid effluent and a floating crust or scum layer. To maintain proper function and prevent overflows or backups, both the effluent and the crust require regular removal from the tank using specialised equipment operated by trained professionals. This crucial maintenance step ensures that the septic system can continue working efficiently and safely.
For septic tanks with a soakaway system, the liquid portion of the waste is gradually dispersed into the soil, leaving only the solid matter behind in the tank. These systems require less frequent pumping, as the solids accumulate slower. However, it is still necessary to have the tank emptied once the solid waste level reaches maximum capacity.
